Fluxes & Tinning
Fluxes and Tinning Compounds are agents that aid in soldering. The main
purpose of these chemicals is to clean the surface, and aid the solder to flow
better. By doing this solder is more likely to evenly cover and completely
seal.
Soldering Flux
Soldering flux comes in either powder or liquid format. It is normally
used when working with larger diameter wires or solder bars. It is
required when working with solid wire solders as they have no internal fluxes.
Tinning Compound
Tinning compounds are a mixture of flux and solders. It is a light to
medium grey and comes in a powder format. The purpose of tinning compounds
is to clean the surface and apply a thin layer of solder to act as a solder
primer.
Solder Paste
Solder pastes are similar to soldering fluxes. The main difference
being that they have a more aggressive cleaning agent and a thicker consistency.
